Worship at st. james

When and Where for Sunday?

10:00 AM at 1540 12th Ave, Oakland (parking lot located at 1223 Foothill Boulevard)

what should i expect?

Our worship is joyful and celebratory. Services at Santiago-St. James are bilingual with a Latiné flair.

Once or twice a month we celebrate Holy Eucharist with our assisting priest, and on other Sundays our deacon leads liturgy of the word before we share the reserved sacrament. Our prayers and liturgies are primarily from the BCP and the rich traditions of the Anglican Communion, with additional celebrations that reflect our cultural heritage, such as the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, our patron feast of Santiago, Las Posadas, and Dia de Los Muertos. We love our creative reimaginings of traditional Holy Week and feast day services, which might involve collective art projects, processions through the neighborhood, or storytelling around shared meals.

We use guitar and sing pan-Latin American music from places like Peru and Mexico. Mainly we sing in Spanish, but lately we have experimented with some traditional hymns in English sung by our fledgling choir.

All are invited to participate in taking the Eucharist.

how do children participate in the sunday service?

This is a church focused on the faith formation of children and young people. Sermons are designed to be intergenerational. Children serve as acolytes and Eucharistic ministers. Children are free to move around the worship space. A special station in the sanctuary has been set up with all kinds of age-appropriate activities for those that wish to engage. Our services are rarely quiet—full of footsteps and giggles. We think it’s a blessing.

how should I dress?

We are a fairly casual bunch. Dress in whatever way you feel most comfortable.

how accessible is your building?

Our sanctuary, parish hall, kitchen and restrooms are on one level. There is a single step with a ramp into the sanctuary. For ramp access to the building, enter through the gate at 1540 12th Ave. If possible, please call ahead for ramp access, as that gate is used by multiple organizations and is sometimes left latched.

For on-site secure parking, navigate to 1223 Foothill Blvd and use the steps to enter through our back porch.

We use amplified sound, but do not have individual headsets.

Our restrooms are single user, wheelchair accessible restrooms with a handrail and changing table.
